memento mori

I love these photos. I wish I knew who they were and the story behind the moment. These were all found in Great Uncle John’s box of photos and negatives. Dad helped me label as many as possible, but there were others he didn’t know, and still others to be developed. I put many of them on the shared family Shutterfly site, but I am hoping to get more of them here and possibly get them identified.

All photographs are memento mori. To take a photograph is to participate in another person’s (or thing’s) mortality, vulnerability, mutability. Precisely by slicing out this moment and freezing it, all photographs testify to time’s relentless melt. ― Susan Sontag
